74th Regiment Armory: Elmwood Music Hall

The 74th Regiment Armory building was one of the first significant civic project for the Bethune & Bethune outside of their work for the Buffalo Public Schools. This project is emblematic of these buildings that were constructed after the Civil War. The 74th Regiment Armory was centrally located at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Virginia Street and was a Flemish Renaissance Revival Style brick building composed of two structures. The 61 feet by 120 feet 3-story administration building served as the main entrance on the street, and the 116 feet by 120 feet drill hall was set directly behind it.

In 1899, the 74th Regiment moved to a new facility on Connecticut Street, which is its home today. The Bethunes’s building was then used as the Elmwood Music Hall until 1938, when it was demolished.
